Accessibility
The Shetland Museum and Archives is fully accessible. The building is accessed by a low bridge across the boatshed slipway which leads via a ramp or steps to the main entrance.
Accessible features within the building include:
- Wheelchair access throughout.
- Two wheelchairs available from reception, free of charge, for visitor use.
- The revolving doors at the entrance can be slowed to half speed by pressing the button on the door.
- Two accessible lifts: one located in the main foyer serving the Archives Searchroom, Hay's Dock Café Restaurant and Upper Gallery; the other adjacent to the Boat Hall (at the far end of the Lower Gallery) to take visitors to the Upper Gallery.
- Hearing loops installed in the main foyer, Auditorium and Café Restaurant.
- Lightweight portable seats mounted in a number of positions around the galleries for visitor use.
- Accessible toilets located next to the main toilets, in Da Gadderie on the ground floor and adjacent to the Café Restaurant on the first floor.
- Small, portable, steps available throughout the galleries for children.
- A second, lower, banister on stairs for children.
