HARVEST FROM THE SEA

Fishing has often been classed as the backbone of Shetland life as it frequently made the difference between food on the table or starvation.  From the eighteenth century onwards there was a link between landownership and the obligation to fish for merchant-lairds in the islands.  Fisherman had to ply their trade for their landlord, under threat of eviction.  Subsistence fishing is also inextricably linked to the Shetland boat, and the boat hall will emphasise that link by ‘book-ending’ the exhibitions across both floors, confirming it’s importance in Shetland life.
