Shetland is surrounded by the sea and it affects all of our daily lives. The fishing industry is of prime importance to the economy of the islands. The growth of the trade and the changes in technology are shown through models and artefacts. This area will show how Shetlanders were much in demand because of their boat-handling skills, and how they travelled the world, many as Captains of their own ships. It will also look at shipwrecks from around the isles, which have often been seen as unexpected bounty. This section will also examine commercial whaling in the South Atlantic, which drew thousands of Shetlanders seeking their fortune.
