Fair Isle Yoal Makes Sea Voyage to Permanent Mooring at Hay's Dock

Three men row the newly launched Fair Isle yoal into Hays DockA Fair Isle Yoal, the first of three replica boats to be constructed as part of a trans-national project, arrived by ferry from Fair Isle this morning (7th September) to become part of the Shetland Museum and Archives maritime collection.

The historic Yoal replica was made in Fair Isle by boatbuilder Ian Best.  Ian loaded the boat on to the Fair Isle Ferry Good Shepherd for its voyage across to Hay’s Dock and its permanent home.

The Yoal will eventually be joined by a sixareen and a haddock boat which will be constructed in the boatshed at the Museum and Archives after it opens to the public next year.

The trans-national NORCE project involves some 17 international partners along the northern seaboard from Canada to Finland, with an overarching theme of ‘Coastal Culture’.  Along with this local boatbuilding element of the project, Shetland is also taking part in a trans-national cook book, boat dictionary and travel trade brochure.
