Appeal for Shetland Place Names
The Shetland Museum and Archives 2010 Hamefarin exhibition is progressing well following the appeal for images and objects relating to Shetland emigrants. However, they have now identified another aspect of emigration they would like to explore and need help from the public again. Their new appeal is for photos and information of Shetland related place names in foreign lands.
Ian Tait, Curator of Collections: “We know of a few Shetland place names in foreign countries and are sure there must be more. These were often names Shetland settlers gave to areas in their new lives and may be rural landscapes, urban districts, or specific buildings. Some of these names were directly taken from places in Shetland, and others (especially streets and buildings) were often named after a Shetland emigrant. If anyone has photos or stories of these we would be very interested to hear from them.”
So, if your ancestor gave a name to a place, or if you know of a Shetland related place name, please contact the Shetland Museum and Archives on:
