2009 Johnsmas Foy Launches at Shetland Museum and Archives

This year’s Johnsmas Foy will be officially opened at the Shetland Museum and Archives, immediately prior to the launch of the dramatic ‘Sails in St Magnus’ exhibition, one of the principal events of this year’s festival.

The opening ceremony, led by Shetland Islands Council Convenor Sandy Cluness, will take place on Thursday 18th June at 6.30pm, followed by the launch of the exhibition by Jimmy Moncrieff, Shetland Amenity Trust General Manager.

The Sails in St Magnus exhibition is based on Earl Rognvald's pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1151, which he dedicated to his uncle, St Magnus.  The sails, produced by Orcadian artists Erlend Brown, Dave Jackson, Mary Scott and Andrew Parkinson, were inspired by a series of one line poems about the voyage, specially written for the project by George MacKay Brown.

Two of the original artists, Dave Jackson and Erlend Brown will be at the opening event to offer guided tours of the exhibition. Dave and Erlend will also conduct further guided tours on 19th and 20th June at 10.30am and 2.30pm each day. The sails themselves will hang in the Museum and Archives auditorium until 2nd August, both the tours are exhibition are free of charge.
