For centuries Shetlanders have been weavers and knitters, and knitting now forms one of the main strands in the islands economy. In the nineteenth century Shetlanders created the much sought after Shetland knitwear and lace. This section will explore the types of wool and natural colours available, and how natural materials were used imaginatively. It will also show how modern influences have affected the traditional designs and how knitting became an important part of commerce.
